Nico’s Dresser and Jose’s Foot

I bet you can’t think of a reason that we’ll always think of Jose’s foot when we look at Nico’s dresser, but read on and you will see!

We had a very busy and productive weekend – Jose working more on the main room cabinets (Nico’s toy chest as Al calls them!), shopping for furniture for Nico’s room, getting baby registry set up, and cleaning out storage closets and organizing at home.  After buying Nico’s dresser, which came in several boxes, we were faced with the challenge of getting them into our very small city car. While pushing one of the boxes into the middle part of the car, we pushed down the emergency brake, and the car started to roll, and rolled right over Jose’s foot! He stopped the car with his shoulder (strong Dad!) and I pulled the brake back up (luckily not when the car was rolling over Jose’s foot!) Jose has a bruise on his poor foot, but is ok – now when we look at the dresser, we think o f Jose’s foot and our scary little car rolling!

On our agenda for June are completing the cabinets (still need to varnish them and put on the doors), a child birth class and potential yoga workshop on preparing for labor, visit to the hospital where we’ll deliver, and my cousin Kit’s visit and our shower end June. With Jose traveling for much of July, we’re aiming to get a lot done in June.

Otherwise, this was the first weekend/time when I really started to feel BIG. Each time I’m uncomfortable though, I just start stretching and moving around, and this always makes me more comfortable. I felt very dizzy and weird in the metro today and might just start to take the bus (double the travel time, but might be better). None of these details are complaints though – I overall feel great and we’re just happy to be closer each day to meeting Nico!

3rd Trimester starts - we SEE Nico move!!!

We officially started the third and last trimester on Sunday!

To celebrate, we did a weekend get-away to a cute Virginia town with overnight at a country inn with pool by a barn's silo. While sitting at the pool, I felt a huge movement that made my arm move that had been lying on my stomach! Jose and I then watched my stomach jump/move twice! The next day, we saw Nico move on my stomach again - while we were again by the pool after a swim. I wonder if this is Nico's love for swimming showing again!

Since just this past weekend, his movements are a lot more clear, and fun! He surprised me a few times at my office today. Though Nico remains thoughtful and well behaved - he will move around in the daytime, and then still quiets down around 11 when I go to sleep. We'll see of course how long this continues, but it just seems so nice of him for now!

With the third trimester here, our priorities now are a child birth class in June, the whole registry process next weekend, and getting a dresser for all of Nico's cute clothes! It's great to be getting closer every day to our time with Nico Luca.

First Mother's Day

While Jose is in Uruguay for our nephew Juan's wedding, Tom (and Nico) and I spent the past weekend at Nags Head, North Carolina, where we have spent many times with our Mom.  We went swimming, walked on the beach, and enjoyed the sun, sea, and sand as our Mom loved to do. The photo to the right shows Nico and I enjoying the sunny day at Nags Head! On our way back to Bald Eagle last night, we stopped at one of our Mom's favorite ice cream spots in Gloucester for ice cream for me and Nico (photo below).

We also saw dear friends the Croswaits during our visit, who showered Nico with cute gifts! And on Mother's Day at a favorite local restaurant, Sam n Omies, they gave Nico a free little baby onesie - he is proving a lucky guy!

So far, Nico has proven not just lucky, but also thoughtful and meaningful! He never (so far) moves around at night, making it easy and comfortable for his Mom to get good rest. And we discovered Nico's gender on Good Friday, I felt his first movement on our 4 year anniversary, and we found out that we're pregnant on Christmas Day! He has already given me and us so many beautiful Mother's Day gifts! Happy Mother's Day to you too Nico!

Remembering Nico's Grandmother

This past weekend, 2 days after Nico's grandmother's birthday, we held a ceremony at the Wellness Community in Delaware to dedicate a tree to my Mom, to honor and remember her contributions to the Wellness Community, and to share our memories and love for her.  Photos of "Nico and me" with my Mom's tree are to the right and below. This tree stands out from the other trees, like my Mom.

Nico, through me, read the below poem for my Mom, who we're calling "GranElla":

I felt my grandmother’s arms wrapped around,
like fog that softly hugs the ground.
I saw joyful twinkling in her eye,
as sparkling stars adorn the sky.
I heard my grandmother’s voice, sweet song lifting
in harmony with breezes drifting.
She etched tender love into my heart,
Always with me right from the start.
Secretly connected before my birth,
I’ll bring my grandmother’s smile to earth.

Nicolas Luca Cabrera

A few week ago, we decided on the name for our little guy: Nicolas Luca Cabrera (Nico for short)

Nicolas is the Patron saint of sailors, ships, and the sea, and also of the country of Greece – a place that my Mom and I traveled to together, and that represents my Mom to me.

Luca means “bringing light,” and also links to the name of the church where Granhud and Granbud, my Mom's parents, were married in Panama: St Lucas.

Nico and Luca are also Italian names, which links to Jose’s Mom’s background (the Macchi in Jose Cabrera Macchi).

Al this past weekend brought a gift for Nico from my Mom: a little painting of sailboats in the Bahamas, that looks a lot like a sailboat race that Jose, Al, and my Mom had seen together there. Al had been with my Mom when she bought the little painting in the Bahamas, and thinks that she was buying it waiting for the right person to give it to, and that she would want to give this to Nico to help decorate his sailboat themed room, as the patron saint of sailors.

Doula, Day Care, and Cabinets!

Lots of progress over the past few weeks, while our little guy has also gone from one pound to one and a half pounds in just the past week (according to what I'm reading about baby around week 23/24!)

After visiting a series of day care centers in downtown DC last week, and learning that we would either have 100 unborn babies ahead of us for March 2013, or that we'd have possibility to get in within 15-19 months from now, we found a center a little bit more out of the way (but still just 7 blocks from my office, and 4 blocks from Foggy Bottom metro), where the directors and staff knew the ins and outs of every baby and child there, and there was a palpable warmth and even international feel that I hadn't seen at the other day cares. Though all the day care centers that we have seen in DC are excellent in their care of children and safety standards, this one was warm and personal. We got to the big wait list question, and they CAN get our little guy in next March! So we are officially on the waiting list and unless every child there there has a sibling born soon, we'll be ok!

Last weekend, Jose and Al worked on building cabinets below the (fake) brick wall they had put it about a month before. Our little guy will have his own room, but there is not another playroom option in our DC apartment. So the idea is that these cabinets can house buckets of toys and child/baby things! Al was very careful at each turn to be sure that everything was properly sanded - no splinters!

And finally, we found and confirmed just yesterday our doula for the birth! I had met and spoke with many kind and qualified women, and we are very happy with the choice we made.

So while our little guy is growing and making his own progress, his parents are also making progress in preparing for his birth, day care and play time in the living room! Today is my Mom's birthday, and I'm extra thankful for our little guy and the joys we will have being his parents.
